Residence in Los Altos Hills
This interior remodel included 3 bathrooms, 4 bedrooms, and 1 family room. The project required fixing a sinking slab-on-grade foundation with dozens of hydraulic push piers spaced around the perimeter and through the master bedroom where the original building had been expanded. In addition to replacing all the flooring, fixtures and finishes, all the exterior windows and doors were replaced within the remodel area as well.
Residence in Los Altos
Originally built in 1957 this single family ranch home desperately needed an update. I designed a complete interior remodel, two story addition over a new basement along with an expansion of the kitchen & living room while maintaining over 50% of the original structure and protecting a large heritage oak tree in the front yard. This project included a new pool and deck along with a unique grass paved driveway. After working to secure planning approval this project was sold to new owners.
Interior Sliding Glass Doors
I designed these sliding glass doors for a family in Palo Alto who wanted a way to create a guest room out of an unenclosed family room. During most of the year, the doors can stack in the open or partially open position at either end or middle of the room to allow the space to function as their family room. When they have a guest come stay, they can completely close off the room for privacy. The doors are solid wood with obscured glass and have a privacy thumb turn latch at both ends.
Architectural Work while at Kahn Design Associates
The scope of my involvement in these architectural projects varied from schematic building design to complex detail design, drafting plans for permits and managing clients & consultants. At all times I was under the supervision of other architects in the firm.
Products & Art Projects
Laser Cut & Engraved Products
These made to order items were available for sale in my shop but have since been discontinued. The blocks were laser engraved with photos submitted by the client to form a six sided puzzle. The paper and acrylic butterflies & chandeliers were made in a choice of colors and sizes. The paper place cards were laser cut with custom names and text engraved underneath each name.
These made to order items were available for sale in my shop but have since been discontinued. The vase wrappers were hand cut and sewn out of Tyvek paper. The phone case was made to order in a choice of fabrics and freehand machine embroidered. The ring was hand cut and made with Tyvek paper. The wallet was also made with Tyvek paper and freehand machine embroidered.
Spiral Meditation Space - Laser Cut/Engraved Model
This design and model was commissioned by a client for a project on prayer/meditation space. The concept I developed was based on the idea that prayer or meditation gives an individual the ability to transform themselves from solid to porous allowing their light to spill out into the universe. I laser engraved the hexagonal tile pattern on museum board and laser cut the spiral and walls at 1/4 scale. The spiral changes height from 4 ft. at the open end to 8 ft. at the center.
I designed and built this cantilever structure for a college class on the nature of structure. For this structure I studied the agave plant and the structure of its fibrous leaves. The finished structure was made with plywood, steel and steel cables. It spans 8 feet horizontally.
